Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River in southern Africa, which provides habitat for several unique species of plants and animals, and gives its name to the city of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

The waterfall’s Sotho language name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, translates into “The Smoke That Thunders”. It is located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and is one of the world’s largest waterfalls, with a width of 1,708 m. Victoria Falls is inscribed in the official list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The first European to record the waterfalls, David Livingstone, traveled here on 16 November 1855. Livingstone Island, one of two land masses in the middle of the river on the Zambian side, is named after this famed explorer. Livingstone named the waterfalls after Queen Victoria.
