TRIBES OF NORTHERN NAMIBIA AND SOUTH TOUR (14 Days) - CODE SWAS 14

Day 1:
In the morning departure from Windhoek to Tsumeb. At Okahandja, a former mission station and the tribal center of the Herero people, visit some Herero graves, the cemetery of the German Schutztruppe and the Kavango woodcarvers market. Via Otjiwarongo and Otavi continue to Tsumeb. At the Cultural village, an open-air museum, visitors get an insight into the rural life of the Namibian people. The display depicts the life, history and culture of the different population groups and includes an exhibition of the different arts and crafts. A visit to the Tsumeb mine museum concludes the day. Lunch en route.

Etosha - Gnus (Wildebeest)

Day 2:
After breakfast depart for the "Treespleeper Camp" near Tsintsabis. It is home to Hei//omn Bushmen, the former habitants of Etosha and surroundings, and the !Kung Bushmen. Until recently the Bushmen practiced a lifestyle of hunting and gathering. They will show you their traditional way of life in a "historic living village".
After a light lunch proceed to Farm Hedwigslust, home of the Ombili foundation. The aim of the foundation is to teach the 300 Bushmen living on the farm to become self-sufficient as "farmers", to sow, produce and harvest crops as an alternative to hunting game, which has become extinct. The Ombili Foundation relies on donations to finance this project. A gratuity of approximately N$ 50.00 is much appreciated.
Depart for Mokuti Lodge bordering the Etosha National Park

Day 3:
Continue further north to 4-O region, the most densely populated region of Namibia (approximately 600 000 people). The Ovambo consist of 8 subtribes. The Nakambale Museum at Olukondo is the first stop, depicting the past and present role of the Finnish Mission, the church and the local cultures. Visit the Ngonga homestead and observe the different demonstrations on wheat crushing, basket weaving, hair braiding, traditional dancing and music etc. A traditional lunch will be served. Proceed to Oshakati via Ondongwa.

Day 4:
Travel through the Omusati region. Flat, sandy plains dotted with Makalani palms, savannah and Mopane woodlands characterize the landscape. Stop at different attractions. Continue to Opuwo via Ruacana. Lunchpacks en route.

Day 5:
Today a typical Himba settlement will be visited. The Himba, a sub-tribe of the Herero - are nomads who are still living their old tradition and culture. Their cattle is their wealth and so they are roving around the area to feed them. That's why there are several deserted settlements to be seen along the way. A local guide, accompanying the group, will negotiate a visit to a "Kraal" with the headman of the trive and will explain the lifestyle and the culture of the Himba. Afterwards return to Opuwo und proceed in southern direction to Hobatere Lodge at the western border of the Etosha Nationalpark. In the afternoon a game drive will take place. Lunchpacks en route.

Ovahimba TribeFish River Canyon

Day 6:
Travel through the western part of Etosha Nationalpark. The oryx and many other antelopes prefer this region. West of Okaukuejo is the well known "Sprokieswoud", Phantom or Fairy Forest, the only location where the African Moringa tree grows in a flat area. Lunchpacks en route. Game viewing continues. At the floodlit waterhole wildlife can be viewed throughout the day as well as at night.

Day 7:
Leave the Etosha National Park after a short game drive in the morning. Return to Windhoek via Outjo, Otjiwarongo and Okahandja. Lunch en route. Arrive in Windhoek during the afternoon.
Overnight/breakfast at the Safari Court.

Day 8:
Drive from Windhoek via Dordabis (visit the oldest Karakul weavery of Namibia), Uhlenhorst and Stampriet to Gochas. Afternoon nature drive.
Dinner/overnight/breakfast at Stoney's Country Hotel or similar.

Day 9:
Drive along the Auob River, visit to the Kokerboom forest (quivertree) and continue to Keetmanshoop and proceed past the Naute Dam to the Cañon Lodge.

Day 10:
Visit the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. This gigantic ravine, in places almost 500 metres deep, has been gorged out of vast undulating plain in the course of thousands of years. Proceed to Klein Aus Vista via Seeheim and Aus.
Dinner/overnight/breakfast at the Desert Horse Inn.

Day 11:
Day visit to Lüderitz, the first German settlement in Namibia, named after the merchant Adolf Lüderitz from Bremen, who bought this area from the Hottentots in 1883. This drive takes you through intriguing moon landscape of endless desert vistas and bizarre rock formations The small harbour town is perched on rugged black rock, offset by the deep blue waters of the bay, and is surrounded by bays, coves and fjords.
During the morning visit to the ghost town of Kolmanskop where diamonds were first discovered in Namibia. Afterwards sightseeing in and around Lüderitz and return to Klein Aus Vista.

Day 12:
Continue through the scenic Neisip Plain and drive along the edge of the Namib Desert, the Tiras Mountains and the Nubib Mountains to Hammerstein Lodge.

Day 13:
In the early morning depart on an excursion to the Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei, a large clay pan in the centre to the Namib Desert, surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world. Arrive round about lunchtime at the Namib Desert Lodge. In the afternoon take part in a dune drive.
Dinner/overnight/breakfast at the Namib Desert Lodge.

Day 14:
Drive via Remhoogte Pass to Rehoboth and visit the Oanob Dam. Return to Windhoek. Arrival in the late afternoon.
